In addition to their literary and artistic aspects, classical Persian narrative texts serve as a mirror reflecting the culture, beliefs, and customs of their era. Amir Khosrow Dehlavi, a prominent Persian-speaking poet of the Indian subcontinent, created works in his Khamseh (Quintet) by drawing on Iranian-Islamic literary traditions and indigenous Indian culture, granting them a high capacity for cultural and semiotic analysis. The present study aims to examine and analyze the cultural codes in four narrative masnavis by Amir Khosrow Dehlavi—Layli o Majnun, Shirin o Khosrow, Aine-ye Eskandari, and Hasht Behesht—based on Roland Barthes' theory of five codes. The main research question is how the cultural code operates in these works and what image it presents of the culture, rituals, beliefs, and social values of the poet's era. Employing a descriptive-analytical method and relying on Barthes' cultural code, this research analyzes the cultural references in the selected works. The findings indicate that the cultural code in Dehlavi's Khamseh can be identified at four main levels: the ritual of kingship and sovereignty, emphasizing concepts of dad (justice), wisdom, and honesty; the mystical beliefs of the Chishti order, including concepts of poverty (faqr), trust in God (tawakkul), and divine love; social customs such as the rituals of marriage, mourning, wine-drinking, Nowruz, and courtly music; and the influence of the indigenous subcontinent culture on female characterization and storytelling.
